a new chapter…

I want to start today’s post with a quote from one of the greats – Albert Hadley. He said, “So many young decorators are trying to reinvent the wheel, and the results are sometimes very dubious. They’re striving to do things that have never been done before. Quite often it is done without authority, without knowledge, and without a background in taste. They need to be educated about the past, and they need a richer vocabulary.

I read this quote several months ago and it really hit home. It was around that time that I was grappling with the idea of taking on a few small projects being offered to me through friends and acquaintances or trying to find part-time work at a firm to get a completely different type of experience than the one offered at school.

When you apply to design school, you don’t realize that they won’t teach you some of the most important aspects of the business – writing purchase orders, shopping the D&D building, working with clients (major, major things)! Learning to draft and developing a stronger background in classical and neoclassical architecture last semester were extremely important aspects of my education but I kept feeling like there was something missing…

To cut this long story short, I quietly applied for and accepted a three-day-a-week internship at Bunny Williams, Inc. My first day was yesterday! It was exciting and scary all at once to get thrown into the mix but just the thing I need to supplement school with. I can already tell it will be an education in and of itself. Along with my studios, classwork, and wrapping up wedding plans, I’ll surely have my hands full during these next several months.

What this means for us? I will definitely have less time to take on the small projects I was planning and maybe (eep) a little less time for blogging… With that said, I plan to continue posting as often as possible (I’m sure inspiration will be aplenty these days) and I hope you’ll wish me luck as I start this new chapter of my burgeoning design career. Below are a few images from Lonny Magazine of Bunny’s sample room where I’ll be spending most of my time. Isn’t it gorgeous?

So now that I’ve chewed your ear off, I want to know, have any of you started a new job, project, or chapter of your lives recently? Please share!

Good for you – I like the sound or Mr Hadley. There is the same thing in portrait and wedding photography at the moment – some innovation, but mostly inexperienced people raising the same issues Mr H does about interior design. Well done on figuring out what you needed and adding it to your life.

Thank you! I say if you have the confidence to go out on your own without any prior experience, more power to you, but for me, it just felt like something was missing… Best of luck in your chosen field!

congratulations! can’t wait to hear all about it and see your latest inspirations!

also – professionally, i think this was 100% the right move. i personally make it a point to work with small businesses whenever possible, and i find that the best experiences inevitably are the ones where the person trained and learned in a more established setting and then went out on their own. this may be b/c my years in the corporate world have made me slightly anal and detail oriented but i think that the people who do this are just better equipped to manage the ins and outs of the business.

don’t get me wrong, i have tons of respect for people who go out on their own without formal work experience… but they seem to have a much higher learning curve!

So good to hear! I totally agree, it would be easy to say I’m just going to go out on my own but that “higher learning curve” you mentioned scares me. What do you do? Of course only share if you want to ;)
