I stumbled upon the work of Barbara Macfarlane after passing by the adorable Rebecca Hossack gallery during one of our Sunday jaunts around Nolita. Later, I found myself perusing the gallery’s website, and because I’m always drawn to interesting maps (remember these from our old apartment?) I immediately stopped to learn more.

Barbara uses beautiful antique maps from the 18th and 19th centuries as a jumping off point in this series – portraying London, Paris, and my own beloved Manhattan in a maze of colorful brushstrokes on handmade paper. I love how vibrant they are! They really capture the energy of each individual city don’t you think? I’ll be bookmarking Barbara’s work for the future…
